It interferes with the growth of cancer cells, which are eventually destroyed. Since the growth of normal body cells may also beaffected, other unwanted effects will also occur. Some of these may be serious and must be reported to your doctor. Other effects may not be serious but may cause concern. Neutropenia, the most important hematologic toxicity, was dose- and schedule-dependent and was generally rapidly reversible. Among patients treatedin phase 3 second-line ovarian study with a 3-hr infusion, neutrophil counts declined <500 cells/mm3 in 14% of patients treated with a dose of 135 mg/m2 compared to 27% at a dose of 175 mg/m2 (p=0.05).
